FilmLab 2026 Roadmap

2025 was a great year for FilmLab. 2026 is looking even better
We’re getting to the end of 2025, and it’s been a good year for FilmLab. We released FilmLab Desktop 3.1 in April, 3.2 in August, and 3.3 in November. FilmLab Desktop 3.4 will be coming out in December. These releases added major new features like auto crop and rotate, Linux support, more color spaces, Jpeg XL exports, a histogram, a better crop tool, and more.
But we have a lot more to do still, so I wanted to share with you our roadmap for 2026. I’ll break the roadmap down into three categories: high-priority fixes and improvements, new mobile apps, and new features.

High Priority Things

These are the most urgent things on our list. All them feel like essentials that are missing now, and we (and many of you our users) won’t be fully comfortable until they’re all done. Our goal is to get all these things addressed in the is 1-3 months.
  • New fast database for image edit metadata. Currently we use .fprc sidecar files to store your FilmLab edits next to the original raw files. These aren’t going away, but we’ve realized that in some cases (particularly external drives and network shares) there can be a lot of latency reading and writing these files. This slows FilmLab down and contributes to instability and crashes. So we’re reengineering our storage system to use a local database first for speed, and then sync the sidecar files later.
  • Undo/redo support (finally!)
  • Better support for folders with large numbers of images
  • File name templates on export, so you can control how your exported files are named, or automatically put them in a subdirectory
  • More and better keyboard shortcuts
  • Support for zooming into full pixel detail on arbitrarily large images
  • More control over sharpening with support for adjusting radius
  • Add missing light source profiles for common light sources
  • Add missing film stock profiles for common film stocks
  • An improved falloff correction tool, and the ability to copy/paste falloff correction and set falloff correction to batches of images
  • Improved support for raw images from scanners, with scanner-specific color profiles
  • Improved documentation, including tutorial videos

New Mobile Apps

FilmLab 3 for Android and iOS has been a long time coming. We’ve been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to get these ready, and we’re excited to release them in early 2026. Besides getting updated to use the latest technology from FilmLab Desktop, the mobile apps will also have:
  • Batch export support
  • Better navigation between folders and images
  • Lens selection tools to make it easier to figure out what lens (and optional lens adapter) on your phone to use for best results

New Features and Enhancements

Once we get the urgent priorities done and the new mobile apps released, we’ll be able to move on to enhancements. These are fun new features that we look forward to getting done in the next 6-12 months
  • Dust and scratch removal tools
  • Raw export
  • A curves tool for more fine-grained contrast adjustment and highlight/shadow control
  • Saturation control
  • Better progress indicators, and cancelability for batch operations
  • Metadata passthrough and control, so you can include metadata from the scan in your export images, and set metadata fields like DPI
  • Export in reduced resolution
  • Folder navigation, so you can move between folders and subfolders inside the FilmLab UI
This roadmap isn't set in stone, so some things may change as we move forward. There are also many small improvements and bug fixes that aren’t listed here. But hopefully this gives a good idea of where FilmLab is headed in the next 12 months. Thanks for reading, and if you think we’ve missed anything important please let us know!
